The 48-96 Shift Pattern
A look at the 48-96 Shift Pattern.
The 48-96 Shift Pattern is a common pattern in fire departments and emergency services that provides 24-hour coverage. This pattern is made up of 3 teams (or crews) and 3 24-hour Shift Durations. This shift pattern occurs on a 6-day cycle, in which teams work for a full 48 hours, followed by 96 hours off. It’s most common in areas where employees have a long commute to and from work.
Pros of the 48-96 Shift Schedule:
- Employees get 4 days off each rotation.
- Employees only need to make 60 commuting trips a year.
Cons of the 48-96 Shift Schedule:
- Employees are away/working for 48 hours, which can lead to fatigue and productivity issues
